DataHub Next direction discussion

See notes below plus recording of discussion from last week with David Gasquez (start at 22:42) https://drive.google.com/file/d/17HQ50Tzc9ILY-Z7lXCMgjtpEtFrbEkHj/view?usp=sharing

Anu comments:

  • Sounds like we want to have something similar but beyond github/datasets where lots of people are curating datasets. Because github/datasets is kind of community of data enthusiasts now curating some datasets. So this is more like - let's create a product out of it, have it's own platform etc.

Rufus Notes on Direction of DataHub (for David Gasquez)

DataHub is a Data Collective. A home for people who want to curate and play with data.

  • focus is on community
  • keep it simple

Potential Features

  • Make it easy to bookmark and archive dataset
    • Paste a url and we store it for you
    • Pain of opening a github repo
  • Turn github repos into a page because that is easiest way to publish
  • Curated "core" datasets in a commons. Connect datasets. Wikipedia for datasets.

Over time:

  • People would build add-ons and tools
  • Business models would arise

Starting point

"unsplash for data": publish one dataset a week that we post on reddit/r/datasets etc with a nice graph.

Post dataset on github.com/datasets

Business model

  • Selling data (long-term)
  • Chargeable API
  • Data bounties and data scraper community

Brainstorm of Options for DataHub

  • Data Projects: a bit like Github for data.
  • Data Publishing: Showcase for your data (intersects with previous)
  • Data Scratchpad (dumping):
  • Data Curating: be part of a club
  • Data Pinterest: pin interesting vis, datasets etc

Website for portal.js

Rufus - here's my advice to Joao

Posted on https://github.com/datopian/portaljs/issues/754

North star again? (where are we going)

Outcome visioning - what does success look like?

People are using it to build portals (including us).

People are buzzing about PortalJS in the data portal community 😜

Brainstorm

A bit more detailed:

    • We see interest, eg, issues/discussion topics etc.
    • Traffic is growing (more a metric)
    • A great looking website with insightful content such as docs, tutorials. (input)

Down the road

  • People are reaching out to Datopian about PortalJS.
  • GitHub Repo is getting attention more stars etc. (metric)

Further Down the road

  • We find first paying or interested in paying clients.
  • LLs/PMs are discussing PortalJS as a great product/framework for new clients.
