About this dataset
Postal Codes Dataset for Australia (AU)
This dataset lists the postcodes of Australia, one row per postcode, with a representative locality, state or territory, Local Government Area and postcode coordinates. Other localities sharing a postcode are listed as alternative city names.
Column definitions, row count, size and last-updated date are in datapackage.yaml.
Data Sources
- Postcodes, localities, states, Local Government Area names and codes, and coordinates: Australian postcodes compiled by Matthew Proctor, published as public domain.
- Local Government Areas: Based on Australian Bureau of Statistics data, Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Edition 3, Local Government Areas 2021, licensed under CC BY 4.0.
Changes made to the source data: source rows are grouped by postcode into one row per postcode. The first locality in source order becomes place_name, its Local Government Area name and code and its coordinates are kept, and the other localities are listed in alternative_city_name.

Usage
The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using
the links provided in datapackage.yaml. Read postal_code as text, never as a number:
Australian postcodes can start with zero (0800).
