About this dataset

Postal Codes Dataset for Canada (CA)

This dataset lists Canada's postal codes, one row per postal code, covering every province and territory. Each record carries the place name, the province or territory, the Census Division and the Census Subdivision (municipality, town, township or reserve) with their SGC 2021 codes, and WGS84 coordinates. The SGC codes join directly against other Statistics Canada geography.

Column definitions, row count, size and last-updated date are in datapackage.yaml.

Data Sources

  • Postal codes, place names and coordinates: © GeoNames, postal code export for Canada (CA_full), CC BY 4.0.
  • Census Division and Census Subdivision names and SGC 2021 codes: contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Canada (Statistics Canada 2021 Census cartographic boundary files). Adapted from Statistics Canada, 2021 Census Boundary Files (cartographic boundary files, Census Divisions and Census Subdivisions), reference date 2021. This does not constitute an endorsement by Statistics Canada of this product. The boundary data is used under the Statistics Canada Open Licence Agreement and the Open Government Licence – Canada, as stated by the service that provides it.

Changes made to the source data: each postal code's Census Division and Census Subdivision are assigned by placing its GeoNames coordinate inside the Statistics Canada 2021 boundaries; a postal code that appears more than once in the source keeps one row, named by the alphabetically first place name (compared without regard to case or accents; ties go to the raw name, then latitude, then longitude), with that row's coordinate and the other names listed as alternative names in the same order; coordinates that are demonstrably wrong are removed.

Not endorsed by, or affiliated with, Statistics Canada or GeoNames.

Known limitations

  • Where a postal code's coordinate could not be placed inside a boundary reliably, the Census Division and Subdivision cells are left blank rather than estimated.
  • Coordinates are postal-code level from GeoNames, not surveyed locations. A small share of coordinates that were demonstrably wrong have been removed, leaving those cells blank.

Usage

The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using the links provided in datapackage.yaml.

Read postal_code as text (format A1A 1A1), never as a number.
