About this dataset
Ethiopia Locality Directory (No Postal Code System), ET
Ethiopia has no deployed national postal code system: the 4-digit format that exists is trial-only, for Addis Ababa alone. This is a free locality directory of populated places across the regions of Ethiopia (those created in the 2023 administrative reform are not yet ISO-coded), coordinates included. postal_code is intentionally empty on every row.
Column definitions, row count, size and last-updated date are in datapackage.yaml.
Data Sources
- Places, regions and coordinates: © GeoNames gazetteer for Ethiopia (not the postal-code export, which does not exist for Ethiopia), CC BY 4.0.
- Region names: the GeoNames admin1 reference table, same licence.
Changes made to the source data: only populated places (feature class P) kept; region names mapped to display names with ISO 3166-2:ET codes; coordinates unchanged.

Known limitations
- Central Ethiopia and South Ethiopia (created in the 2023 split of the former SNNPR) have no ISO code yet, so their rows keep the region name and have an empty
admin_code1. - Rows whose GeoNames region code has no entry in the reference table have empty
admin_name1andadmin_code1. accuracyandalternative_city_nameare always empty.

The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using
the links provided in datapackage.yaml.
