About this dataset
Postal Codes Dataset for France (FR)
This dataset lists French postal codes with place names, regions, departments, arrondissements and coordinates, across every region and department.
Column definitions, row count, size and last-updated date are in datapackage.yaml.
Data Sources
- Postal codes, place names, administrative divisions and coordinates: © GeoNames postal code export for France, CC BY 4.0.
Changes made to the source data: values are copied as supplied, except that rows differing only in coordinates (about 100-200 m apart, same commune) are collapsed to one, keeping the smallest latitude and longitude, and rows are sorted by region, department and postal code.
Not endorsed by, or affiliated with, GeoNames.
Known limitations
alternative_city_nameis always blank: this source does not supply it.- Postal codes can carry a suffix (
CEDEX,CEDEX N,SP NN,AIR,CITYSSIMO), for example01001 CEDEX. - A postal code can appear on several rows, for several places or for distinct communes in different departments or arrondissements, so
postal_codealone is not a key.
Usage
The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using
the links provided in datapackage.yaml. Read postal_code as text, never as a number:
French codes can start with zero (01000), and some carry a CEDEX suffix.
