About this dataset
Postal Codes Dataset for Japan (JP)
This dataset lists Japanese postal codes (format NNN-NNNN) with place names, prefectures, municipalities and coordinates, across every prefecture.
Column definitions, row count, size and last-updated date are in datapackage.yaml.
Data Sources
- Postal codes, place names, administrative divisions and coordinates: © GeoNames postal code export for Japan, CC BY 4.0.
Changes made to the source data: prefecture codes (admin_code1) derived as ISO 3166-2:JP by a name-based crosswalk of the prefectures; exact duplicate rows dropped; rows sorted by prefecture, postal code and place name.
Not endorsed by, or affiliated with, GeoNames.
See ATTRIBUTION.txt for the full attribution notice.
Known limitations
- Primary key is (
postal_code,place_name,admin_code2,admin_name3). admin_name3(town/subdivision) is populated on only part of the rows and is empty where the source has no value.admin_code2is GeoNames' own internal identifier, not an official Japanese administrative code.- Values are as the source supplies them, including stray spaces in
admin_name2/admin_name3. alternative_city_nameis empty.
Usage
The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using
the links provided in datapackage.yaml. Read postal_code as text, never as a number:
Japanese codes can start with zero (001-0000).
