About this dataset
Libya Locality Directory (No Postal Code System), LY
Libya has no operational postal code system. This is a free locality directory of populated places across every district (shabiyat), coordinates included. postal_code is intentionally empty on every row; this is a structural fact about the country, not a data gap.
Column definitions, row count, size and last-updated date are in datapackage.yaml.
Data Sources
- Places, districts and coordinates: © GeoNames gazetteer for Libya (not the postal-code export, which does not exist for Libya), CC BY 4.0.
- District names: the GeoNames admin1 reference table, same licence.
Changes made to the source data: only populated places (feature class P) kept; GeoNames' district codes mapped to display names with ISO 3166-2:LY codes; coordinates unchanged.
Not endorsed by, or affiliated with, GeoNames.

Known limitations
- Places whose GeoNames district code is blank, reserved ("00") or a stale pre-reform code have an empty
admin_name1andadmin_code1. accuracy,alternative_city_nameand the second and third administrative tiers are empty.

The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using
the links provided in datapackage.yaml.
