About this dataset
Postal Codes Dataset for Malaysia (MY)
This dataset contains Malaysian postcodes — 2,931 rows covering 2,930 distinct five-digit codes across all 16 states and federal territories.
Administrative coverage: Only the state tier (admin_name1 / admin_code1) is
populated in this release. District (daerah) and mukim tiers are reserved as empty
columns rather than omitted, so a future release can add them without a schema change;
no source has yet been confirmed with a licence that clears redistribution.
One postal code can serve more than one place. Postcode 40160 legitimately covers
both Sungai Buloh and Shah Alam in Selangor — the primary key is (postal_code,
place_name), never postal_code alone.
Coordinate coverage: 91.4% of rows carry a coordinate. Where a postal code did not
resolve to a single confident point, latitude, longitude and accuracy are left
blank rather than guessed.
Note: This dataset is a sample containing the first 100 rows. If you need access to the complete dataset, please contact our sales team for more information: support@datahub.io
Data Sources
Postal codes, states and places are sourced from the Postcode Dataset published by the
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) via data.gov.my (CC BY 4.0).
Coordinates are sourced from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0), joined by postal code. admin_code1
is the ISO 3166-2:MY code with the MY- prefix stripped.
Usage
The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using the links provided in the datapackage.yml.
postal_code carries significant leading zeros and must be read as text (dtype=str),
or use the schema in the packaged datapackage.json.
