About this dataset

Postal Codes Dataset for New Zealand (NZ)

This dataset lists New Zealand's four-digit postcodes, one row per postcode, with the place name, region, territorial authority and coordinates. Other localities that share a postcode are listed in alternative_city_name.

Column definitions, row count, size and last-updated date are in datapackage.yaml.

Data Sources

  • Postcode list, place names, regions, community territorial-authority names and coordinates: New Zealand postcodes compiled by Matthew Proctor, public domain.
  • Address-based coordinates: © Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), NZ Addresses, CC BY 4.0.
  • Territorial authority names and codes: © Stats NZ, Territorial Authority 2025, CC BY 4.0.

Changes made to the source data: one row per postcode (first community row kept, other localities for the postcode moved to alternative_city_name); region codes mapped to ISO 3166-2:NZ; LINZ address points reduced to one centroid per locality; territorial-authority names and codes standardised to Stats NZ 2025 names and codes.

Not endorsed by, or affiliated with, Matthew Proctor, LINZ or Stats NZ.

Known limitations

  • The postcode list itself is community-compiled: NZ Post licenses its postcode file commercially.
  • A row takes the LINZ centroid and Stats NZ territorial authority only when the locality's territorial authority lies in the row's region; otherwise the community name (standardised to the Stats NZ name and code) and community coordinates are kept.
  • LINZ centroids ignore points outside the main islands (for example the Chatham Islands) and are rounded to 6 decimal places.
  • admin_name3, admin_code3 and accuracy are always empty.

Usage

The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using the links provided in datapackage.yaml. Read postal_code as text, never as a number: New Zealand codes can start with zero (0114).
