About this dataset
Postal Codes Dataset for Serbia (RS)
This dataset contains Serbian postal codes with place names, coordinates, and the district (okrug) of each place. It replaces a prior release that shipped every admin field as the literal string "nan".
Column definitions, row count, size and last-updated date are in datapackage.yaml.
Data Sources
- Postal codes, place names and coordinates: © GeoNames, postal code export for Serbia, CC BY 4.0 – commercial use and resale permitted on attribution alone, no share-alike.
- District (okrug) data: the GeoNames gazetteer dump for Serbia, same publisher and licence.
Changes made to the source data: the postal export carries no admin fields, so the district (admin_name1/admin_code1) is derived by matching each row's place name against the GeoNames gazetteer (falling back to the nearest coordinate when no name matches, and choosing the geographically nearest candidate for same-named places); admin_code1 uses the ISO 3166-2:RS district codes; district RS-17, which GeoNames' own admin2Codes.txt names "Morava", is named "Moravica" (Moravički okrug) as in the ISO register; admin_name2/admin_code2 is set to "Vojvodina"/"RS-VO" for the districts of Vojvodina.
Not endorsed by, or affiliated with, GeoNames.
Known limitations
- No official bulk postal-code source exists for Serbia: Posta Srbije's own site offers only a single-address lookup tool, not a downloadable list.
- Serbia's administrative structure is asymmetric and is preserved rather than flattened: Vojvodina is an autonomous province containing some of the districts, while the remaining districts, including Belgrade, sit directly at country level with no parent province code in Serbia's ISO structure. For those,
admin_name2/admin_code2is genuinely empty, not a missed lookup. admin_name3/admin_code3are not populated: neither GeoNames export reaches municipality (opština) level for Serbia.- Known source data defect, disclosed rather than corrected or dropped: the row for postal code 14000 / place_name "Lipljan" carries the exact same coordinate (44.2751, 19.8982) as the same code's genuine "Valjevo" row. Lipljan is a real town, but it is in Kosovo, roughly 230 km from Valjevo. This is an upstream GeoNames error. Both rows are kept as-is (this dataset does not alter source coordinates or drop source rows), but "Lipljan"/14000's district assignment (Kolubara, via Valjevo's coordinate) should not be trusted as Lipljan's real location.
