About this dataset
Postal Codes Dataset for United States (US)
This dataset lists US ZIP codes, one row per code, with place names, states and counties (5-digit county FIPS codes), and WGS84 coordinates. Other place names sharing a ZIP code are listed in alternative_city_name.
Column definitions, row count, size and last-updated date are in datapackage.yaml.
Data Sources
- ZIP codes, place names, states and coordinates: © GeoNames, postal code export for the United States, CC BY 4.0.
- County names and codes: US Census Bureau, 2020 ZCTA-to-County relationship file (Census reference files), a US Government work in the public domain, taken from the public-domain zctaCrosswalk mirror.
Changes made to the source data: one row per ZIP code (first row kept, other place names appended to alternative_city_name; rows with a blank ZIP dropped); admin_name3 and admin_code3 blanked; admin_code2 set to the Census 5-digit county code and admin_name2 to the Census county name where the ZIP code can be matched to a county, otherwise the state FIPS code plus GeoNames' county code.
Not endorsed by, or affiliated with, GeoNames or the US Census Bureau.
Known limitations
- Census county names pass through title-casing, so "Prince George's County" appears as "Prince George'S County".
- Rows for ZIP codes that are not ZCTAs (for example PO-box ZIP codes), military (APO/FPO) rows and the Marshall Islands rows keep GeoNames' county name, and for rows with no state FIPS or no GeoNames county code, GeoNames' county code.
- There is no third administrative tier.
Usage
The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using
the links provided in datapackage.yaml. Read postal_code as text, never as a number:
US codes can start with zero (02020).
