Hello

Happy Open Data Day!

inflation rates

You can build the whole page from scratch. You can currently use a set of components. It is very flexible and you will be able to customize it.

Data package spec. It renders the page using a default layout.

Customizing it

Hey, you can customize it. You don't need to use datapackage.json. You can use PortalJS components. How do I use it?

After you

Edit the data package spec…

You either have a Frictionless data spec.

You can have a datapackage.json or yaml separately

Or you can use our template.

Who are we

We are Datopian. We are leading CKAN and data experts. We're passionate about data. Passionate about its power to help us understand and shape our societies. And we want to democratize that power by giving more people, more access to high-quality data and tooling.

That's why this Open Data Day, we're pulling back the curtain on something that's going to simplify data sharing and make it more impactful.

What need are we solving?

We are solving the need of power users, data warriors, fighting the good fight… the need of data engineers and data scientists, people familiar with Github, to share and/or publish their data quickly and easily in a usable form.

* It is already easy to "share" data: just use dropbox, google drive, s3, GitHub etc. However, it’s not so easy to share it in a way that’s usable e.g. with descriptions for the columns, data that’s viewable and searchable (not just raw), with clearly associated docs, with an API etc.

  • Yes, you can post a data file somewhere e.g. drive, s3 etc. But that's not very attractive/useful for others (or even yourself in a few months)
  • Yes, you can use Github - we do like github and we build the product I am about to showcase off it BUT it's not great for data presentation
    • Fails to display a CSV over a couple of MB
    • Want embedded viz? No luck there …
    • Want a catalog? …
    • Want to store data over a few MBs …
  • You can get a data catalog of your own: time consuming, complex, overkill (expensive). You may just want to publish a dataset or two to start with…
  • This is why we want to make it easy and quick to publish your data in a few clicks.

What is our solution?

Which leads me to the solution. In it's initial version, Datahub Cloud makes it stupidly easy, fast, and reliable to share your data in a useable* way. We will ofc continue building on top of that (will touch upon the features later in my presentation)

DataHub Cloud isn't about reinventing the wheel. It's about adding a new layer of polish and functionality to your data projects.

EASY data publishing. You can do it nicely in 2 minutes.

How it works

  • No need to set anything up etc
  • Connect your GitHub repo and go
  • Just dump a file, stub a readme, click a button and you are done. It's Live!

What we are doing is we are giving markdown docs superpowers:

  • You can easily mix rich text content with data and data visualizations.
  • No need to code or embed your charts and tables: they can be added to the document with a very simple syntax, either by passing inline data or simply referencing your data files.

What you end up with is a human-readable document enriched with data visualizations, that is simple to edit and looks awesome when published with DataHub.

Let me show you how it works

DEMO:

This is my Github account and this is the repository I want to use for my demo.

https://github.com/Daniellappv/oil-prices-this

In a few seconds, I will turn it into a nice published site.

Let me go to Datahub Cloud now (i am signed up already)

https://cloud.datahub.io/

I click on Create a new site. I select the repo I just presented. I click Create a site. It's ready and it's live. Let us explore it together!
