Deaths, injuries and property and crop damage caused by weather in the United States, by event type, for each year from 1997 to 2025 (29 years, 788 rows), taken from the National Weather Service's annual Summary of U.S. Natural Hazard Statistics. One row per year and event type, with the source's own total row for each year flagged by is_total — do not sum a total row with its components. Figures cover the 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands and are compiled by the NWS from Storm Data. Damage is in millions of nominal US dollars of the year reported, never inflation-adjusted; hurricane rows count wind damage only, with storm surge, rainfall flooding and tornadoes counted under their own event types, so no row is a complete cost for a named storm. The event vocabulary changes over the range: Rip Current is reported from 2002, Small Stream/Urban Flood only to 2006, and two labels are re-spelled in 2007 (Tstm Wind becomes Thunderstorm Wind, Tropical Storm/Hurricane gains spaces) — hazard keeps the source's label verbatim and hazard_id folds those two spelling changes only. The source has no machine-readable index: the 31 annual documents are PDFs listed nowhere but a hand-maintained menu on one HTML page, which offers a 1995 summary the server does not have. source-documents.csv accounts for all 31, including the 1995 document that 404s and the 1996 one that is page images with no extractable text. The most recent year is preliminary and earlier years are revised without notice — the source's own Report generated footers show 2007-2015 regenerated in 2016, 2019 in 2021 and 2024 in 2026 — and there is no change feed, so only re-fetching and diffing can reveal a restatement.
