Datahub Individual Cloud vs Datahub Self-hosted
- Individual Cloud (B2C): it is important and we are focusing on getting some customers.
- Self-hosted: We will just host everything on your cloud. They just need to know the features.
- Individuals selling it to Enterprise. Listen when they provide feedback.
We will give people immediate access.
Datahub Community Edition / Datahub Toolkit
rename PortalJS to Datahub Portaljs
Let's call it all one thing. And let's update the hero section text.
Part of the sales story of us has gotta be the brand of it:
- they have VCs, we are independent, we are open source, we are the community
- We are owned by Lifeitself nonprofit
- Our surplus will go…
- you guys are independent, picking up the rebellious part of the society,
- We should have this as Datahub Cloud
- You can install the product and you can do a self hosted version
- How to install Ghost
- PortalJS as basic community edition –>
- Competing with … Observable, data.world (selling data catalogs to enterprise),
You can help build this with us
Something along those lines
People who sign up become members of the Data collective // community //
we could then make money with the technology…
the data community .. we get onboard
GHOST-like pricing model. People sell their datasets and they charge for their datasets and we take a cut . marketplace
independent, community-driven, small and community-oriented, open source
Pitch
What we are doing in the very beginning:
You can turn a dataset or a data story on GitHub (at the beginning) into an elegant published site in a click or two. This is the core
Maybe in the future, you will be able to just drop files, and BAM, you have it. But for the initial version.
The next part of this is… you will try the dogfood with us.
There are places we want to go with this (data api, data processing) But at the very beginning the question is What do we offer beyond GitHub?
- preview of tables
- preview of data..
We think some people are publishing at least small data on Github and there is simplicity and elegance.
The rough flow at the moment is …
Things we'd like to add. Catalog feature. We create a bunch of datasets on Github. Github repo listing even with pin repository is nice but not great. So we think there is potential there.
How are we different than
- Obsidian
- Obsidian is focused on personal notes and journaling. Not on data publishing
- You can embed a chart but you need a plugin
- This is what the table looks like

Pitching for ODD
GitHub is among the largest hosts of open data globally, with more than 11 million repositories containing more than 142 terabytes of publicly available data.
As we approach Open Data Day 2024, I wanted to share an exciting proposal regarding our participation and the announcement of a new product, DataHub Cloud.
Given the thematic focus of Open Data Day this year, "Open Data for Advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," we believe that DataHub Cloud aligns perfectly with this mission.
DataHub Cloud is not only a powerful tool for individuals and organizations to unlock the potential of their data but also a catalyst for driving progress towards the SDGs. By empowering users to seamlessly transform their GitHub repositories into elegant and interactive data-driven sites, DataHub Cloud democratizes access to information and fosters collaboration in addressing global challenges.
We believe announcing DataHub Cloud on Open Data Day is both timely and relevant:
-
Promoting Open Data Principles: DataHub Cloud embodies the principles of open data by making it easier for individuals and organizations to share and explore data in meaningful ways. By highlighting this product on Open Data Day, we reinforce our commitment to advancing transparency, collaboration, and innovation through open data initiatives.
-
Supporting Sustainable Development Goals: With its focus on empowering users to leverage data for positive social and environmental impact, DataHub Cloud directly contributes to the achievement of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. From addressing climate change to promoting health and well-being, open data plays a vital role in driving progress across all SDG targets.
-
Showcasing Innovation: Open Data Day presents an ideal platform to showcase innovative solutions that leverage the power of data for social good. By introducing DataHub Cloud to the global open data community, we demonstrate our ongoing commitment to innovation and our dedication to providing accessible tools for data-driven decision-making.
We believe that by announcing DataHub Cloud on Open Data Day 2024, we not only amplify our impact in advancing open data initiatives but also inspire others to join us in harnessing the transformative potential of data for sustainable development.
We welcome the opportunity to discuss this proposal further and explore how we can collaborate to make Open Data Day 2024 a memorable and impactful event.
